Joe Boggs

Professional Title:

Assistant Professor, Ohio State University Extension and the OSU Department of Entomology; Commercial Horticulture Educator, OSU Extension, Hamilton County

Biographical Sketch:

MR. BOGGS holds a B.S. in Biology/Chemistry and M.S. in Entomology. He has managed high-profile landscaping (Pennsylvania Governor's Residence and the PA Capital Complex) and a 500 acre tree farm in central PA. He has worked for more than twenty years with Ohio State University Extension, focusing on landscape plant problem diagnostics and management. Boggs has published numerous articles in trade and professional journals and averages more than seventy teaching presentations per year.

Jim Chatfield

Professional Title:

Associate Professor & Extension Specialist, Ohio State University Extension, Department of Horticulture & Crop Sciences, Department of Plant Pathology

Biographical Sketch:

Mr. CHATFIELD holds an M.S. in Plant Pathology from Ohio State University and a B.S. in Botany from Ohio University, with experience managing a greenhouse in Denver, Colorado and working in a number of plant diagnostic labs. Jim started with OSU Extension in 1987 and specializes in, teaches and writes about plant problem diagnostics, proper plant selection, plant evaluations, and plant diseases. Jim provides leadership to the OSU Extension Nursery Landscape and Turf Team and the OSUE ‘Why Trees Matter’ program. He teaches throughout Ohio and the U.S. at green industry programs and publishes articles in a number of scientific, Extension outreach, and trade journals.

Dr. John R. Hartman

Professional Title:

Extension Professor Emeritus, Plant Pathology Dept, University of Kentucky

Biographical Sketch:

JOHN R. HARTMAN received his Ph.D. in plant pathology, (botany minor) from the University of Wisconsin; he is now a partly retired Plant Pathology Professor at the University of Kentucky. He has almost 40 years of experience with extension educational programming and applied research on diseases of landscape plants. He has also taken sabbatical leaves at the University of California, ADAS in England, and INRA in France to do research on diseases of landscape plants. At the University of Kentucky, Dr. Hartman teaches a graduate-level course on plant disease diagnosis. He is a member of the American Phytopathological Society and the International Society of Arboriculture. In 2007, he was made a Fellow of the American Phytopathological Society.

Julie Beale

Professional Title:

Diagnostician in the University of Kentucky’s Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratory

Biographical Sketch:

JULIE BEALE has been the Diagnostician in the University of Kentucky’s Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (Lexington) since 1996. She is a native of North Carolina and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1989 and then completed a Master of Sciences in Plant Pathology from the University of Minnesota in 1995. In addition to her diagnostic responsibilities, Julie assists in teaching general plant pathology and plant diagnostics at UK, as well as providing Master Gardener and other training on plant disease diagnosis and management at the county level. She recently conducted research comparing various detection methods for Phytophthora root and crown rot in woody ornamentals, which was presented at the 16th Annual Ornamental Workshop of Diseases and Pests in 2008.

Joe Collins

Senior Nursery Inspector, UK College of Agriculture

Biographical Sketch:

JOE COLLINS is in charge of the emerald ash borer trapping program for Kentucky. He has been employed by the UK Dept of Entomology for 17 years. He also represents Kentucky on the National Plant Board (organization of the plant pest regulatory agencies of each of the states and Commonwealth of Puerto Rico).

Dr. Rebecca Schnelle

Professional Title:

Assistant extension professor for floriculture and greenhouse crops at the University of Kentucky

Biographical Sketch:

REBECCA SCHNELLE is the assistant extension professor for floriculture and greenhouse crops at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY. She received a B.S. in Horticulture from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 2003 and a Ph.D. in Horticulture from the University of Florida in 2008. Rebecca’s extension programs are focused on assisting Kentucky’s many new and established floriculture producers to improve the sustainability of their operations. This sustainability mission will assist growers in selecting the most suitable crops for their business and the most efficient ways to produce them while assuring that their crops will perform well for the end consumer. Current projects include the Kentucky statewide bedding plant trial garden program; a network of landscape performance trial gardens spanning nine Kentucky counties. Dr. Schnelle’s research program includes projects focused on improving height control strategies and post harvest life of greenhouse crops as well as beneficial insects in the landscape. Rebecca also co-teaches greenhouse and nursery production during spring semesters.

Brenda Guglielmina

Professional Title:

Southeastern Regional Manager for DeepRoot Partners

Biographical Sketch:

BRENDA GUGLIELMINA is the Southeastern Regional Manager for DeepRoot Partners. Since working with the company, she has learned through experience about the many needs of trees and how they function in urban environments. Currently, the Silva Cell technology is taking up most of her time and energy. She works closely with municipalities, landscape architects and engineers, educating them and acting as a team player on many projects. DeepRoot designs and manufactures products for trees and stormwater, returning natural hydrology to the soil and bringing multiple functions to the landscape. Since 1993 Brenda has held a series of positions with DeepRoot, giving her a thorough base of knowledge of the company. Brenda has a BS degree from San Jose State University.

Dr. Shawn Wright

Biographical Sketch:

Dr. Dan Potter

Biographical Sketch:

DAN POTTER is a Professor of Entomology at the University of Kentucky where he has studied and taught about turf and landscape pests for 32 years. He has published hundreds of scientific and trade journal articles as well as the book Destructive Turfgrass Insects: Biology, Diagnosis, and Control. Dr. Potter has been a Keynote Speaker at scientific and industry conferences throughout the world. He has received national awards in Teaching, Urban Entomology, and Horticultural Entomology, as well as the US Golf Association Green Section Award and the Lawn and Landscape Leadership Award for service to the Green Industry.

Clete J. Benken, ASLA

Biographical Sketch:

MR. BENKEN’S twenty years of professional experience include all facets of urban planning, design and construction documentation. His project experience includes community and neighborhood planning, urban redevelopment, mixed use and commercial development, parks and recreation planning and multi-modal transportation planning and design.

Well versed on the design principles of urban redevelopment, Mr. Benken is a frequent speaker at local and regional planning workshops and conferences throughout the Midwest.

Over the past nine years Mr. Benken has been instrumental in the development of City of Covington’s Downtown Core Strategic Plan, Lexington Downtown Streetscape Master Plan, and several capital improvement projects including Lexington’s Cheapside Park, Limestone Avenue, Main Street, and Vine Street enhancements.

Kinzelman Kline Gossman design & planning is a multi-disciplinary design firm made up of professional landscape architects, architects, and planners with offices in Covington, Kentucky; Columbus, Ohio; and Indianapolis, Indiana.

Mr. Benken is a registered Landscape Architect with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Ohio State University, 1989. He is a member of The Kentucky Chapter of American Society of Landscape Architects, The Urban Land Institute, and The Kentucky Chapter of the American Planning Association. He currently serves at the Vice President for Community Development for Kennedy Heights Community Council in Cincinnati, Ohio.
